Las Palmas is the capital of Gran Canaria and the biggest city in the region of the Canary Islands with a population of more than 400,000. La Vegueta is the Old Town located in the heart of Las Palmas and it was built in the 15th century. The roads in the Old Town are paved and there are many old-fashioned houses as well as the ancient walls which have been declared as a World Heritage by UNESCO twenty years ago and this part of the city is perfect for an evening walk.

The Old Town is dominated by the historical Santa Ana Cathedral towers and according to historical literature, the construction of this cathedral started in 1500 AD, but it was completed only in the 19th century because of limited resources and this is the reason behind the many different architectural styles of this cathedral. You can visit the Sacred Art Museum as well, which is located in the cathedral and contains some historical displays of artistic works. Towards the north side of the Old Town is the famous Triana with some beautiful sights which include the Iglesia de San Francisco Church which was re-constructed in the 17th century after it was razed by a fire in an incursion by the Dutch Pirates.

Calle Mayor is the pedestrian way in Triana where you can find many shops, chain stores, bars and cafes.Casa de Museo de Colon is among the best attractions of the city as it was the residence of Christopher Columbus in 1492, but in 1952, this place was converted into a museum containing the great displays related to the famous explorers who undertook journeys for exploring the new world. Museo Canario, which was constructed in 1879, is another great tourist attraction in the city as it contains a varied collection of different objects like jewelry, pottery and skeletons belonging to the 15th century.

Plaza del Espirito is also located near the museum and this pleasant square is surrounded by many historical sites and buildings and it also contains a beautiful fountain in the middle of the square.Some of the finest beaches of the country are here in villa in spain, Las Palmas including Playa de las Alcaraneras and Playa de las Canteras which is very famous among kite surfers and windsurfers. The Kraus Auditorium is also located nearby and is famous for hosting number of international festivals.
